"Operation Teacup" is a group of VOLUNTEER AIRCRAFT OWNERS who recognized the need for immediate response during the early hours of Hurricane Katrina.
"
Operation Teacup" Aircraft Owners -Pilots are individuals who decided to make a TIMELY difference and did so through their own networking. The refugees these aircraft owners evacuated are still alive to tell their stories, not in body bags which are still backordered by the federal government..These VOLUNTEER AIRCRAFT OWNERS paid for their own fuel and maintenance bills. The average flight was in excess of 2,000 miles and cost on average $1,200 or more, in direct out of pocket expenses
to the pilot for aviation fuel. At times aviation fuel prices were in excess of $5.00/gallon.All VOLUNTEERS were told from the beginning, they should expect
NO PAY, NO THANKS, HARD WORK, LITTLE SLEEP – PLENTY OF ALLIGATORS.
They carried out their mission with NO PROMISES OF HELP. They did it anyway, out of a feeling of personal responsibility.
Many kept going back for more until the job was done. The ones that did not, did not because they could not afford to continue, or we ran out of people needing help for the moment.
Here is the story of one of the evacuation flights.Operation Teacup is NOT A COMMERCIAL OPERATION under Part 121 or Part 135 of the Federal Aviation regulations. NO CHARGE is made for the services provided. All operations were conducted under Part 91 which is the private aviation section of the Federal Aviation Regulations.
According to Federal Law, a pilot on a non-commercial flight must share his pro-rata share of the expenses.
After consideration of the allegations of scams and news reports by the FBI, various federal officials, state agencies, and others whose mission in life seems to be to assume people who want to help are dishonest thieves, and make inferences as such, in numerous publications, which profit from selling these allegations to the general public.
A DETERMINATION HAS BEEN MADE by Operation Teacup, that WE WILL NOT ACCEPT DONATIONS FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC because we do not wish to open ourselves up to allegations of fraud, kickbacks, etc by various politicians seeking notoriety and headlines.
Because of the complexity of Federal Aviation Law, the liklihood of expensive lawsuits by headline seeking public officials, time consuming official investigations, and other non-productive waste of the small resources we have available, AS WELL AS the demonstrated history of political and government interference from the beginning of this disaster.
. Operation Teacup has received NO DONATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC and will return any that might come in after 10-5-2005 based on statements in this website prior to the 10-5-2005 update.
Effective 10-5-2005, ALL Operation Teacup Pilots ARE BEING TOLD THAT THEY ARE NOT TO ACCEPT DONATIONS OF ANY KIND
To the extent that the participants of Operation Teacup can afford to help the victims of this diaster through our own efforts, we will continue to do so. When the resources run out, the resources run out.
Operation Teacup will CONSIDER offers of SUBSTANTIAL HELP from reputable CORPORATE of INDIVIDUAL sponsors which are the subject of written contract which is not subject to mis-interpretation.
OPERATION TEACUP is and has been an expensive operation for our volunteers. The minimum sponsorship is $5,000,000 which can provide for approximately 4,000 flights. Even a small teacup is expensive to fill.
OPERATION TEACUP can be an important national resource in future disasters if handled in a responsible manner. If you are in a position to consider this sort of sponsorship and would like to offer help of the magnitude needed, then feel free to send an email.Donations@teacup.cjb.net Subject - Corporate Sponsor Inquiry
